The absurdist play ‘The Lesson’ envisages the decline of an educator and pupil to that of the destructive and Fascist beliefs of the Nazi Party.

This production chose to present this story with the use of creative captioning. I wanted the costume journey to reflect this, with the use of layering, both teacher and pupil reveal more. The educator gradually transforming from a warm, learned professor to a fully uniformed Nazi; in turn, the Pupil becomes increasingly absorbed by his words, the writing literally inking itself across her.

“direction and design in this production are thoroughly considered and executed with accuracy and passion.”

Mariam Mathew, London Pub Theatres

“The costumes by Isabella Van Braeckel are also on point, with a final reveal tying up nicely the senseless intrigue into a thought-provoking social commentary on totalitarianism and the power of indoctrination.”

Klervi Gavet, North West End
