A new musical based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel ‘The Great Gatsby’.
The production explored the artists personal experiences, taking them from or up to their dream performance. The performers dictated the music chosen against a fake radio programme, a little like Desert Island Discs, we were give a chance to meet the singers behind their roles.
The set was heavily inspired by the opulence of Gatsby’s parties juxtaposed by the reflections of the water and moments travelling to the faded beauty of the dockside and Luna Park. The small space also had to encapsulate the band, large dance numbers and quick location changes.
“Re-creating the splendour of an affluent jazz age Long Island in the Southwark Playhouse’s modest Little Space is a tall order, but Gatsby’s design team – Isabella Van Braeckel, along with Belle Mundi on costumes and Dominic Warwick on lighting – do sterling work here. Characters are bathed in unnatural mixed light, mirroring the artificiality of their upper-crust lives, and making the appearance of a bouquet of flowers all the more powerful”
Musical Theatre Review
“This unusual and dream-like musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic The Great Gatsby manages to use a minimal set and fabulous vintage aesthetic to bring this story to life […] A splendid performance.”
